From a Maidan Tent to Opening for India
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Yashasvi Jaiswal grew up in a small village in Uttar Pradesh. His father, Bhupendra, runs a small hardware shop in Suriyawan, and the family could not afford his cricket. Around the age of 11, in 2011–12, he travelled to Mumbai with an uncle who was unable to support him there.

After a few months in a Mumbai suburb, the uncle approached the Muslim United cricket club at Azad Maidan and asked whether the boy could stay. The club manager, Zulfikar Sheikh, told The Week that the owners were reluctant at first but agreed after hearing that he was a good player. Yashasvi lived at the club in a tent for about three years. Sheikh gave him food, kit and Rs 50–100 for snacks, and in return he helped with errands, cooking and odd jobs. A close friend, Mudassir Khan, recalled him practising late into the night and running at 5 a.m.

A local coach, Jwala Singh, noticed him at Azad Maidan, took him in, bought him shoes and kit and enrolled him in his academy. Yashasvi did household work in return. Singh managed his cricket and money for about eight years; the article reports that the two are no longer in touch and that Yashasvi prefers not to discuss it in detail.

He began playing Division A cricket in Mumbai at 12, often against bowlers about ten years older, and moved up through the under-16, under-19 and under-23 sides to the Mumbai Ranji team. He scored a List-A double century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and at the 2019 Under-19 World Cup he made a century and four fifties and was named player of the tournament. Rajasthan Royals picked him up for the 2020 IPL season and retained him before the 2022 auction for Rs 4 crore, and he now opens the batting for the franchise.

He told The Week that the only person he has to prove anything to is himself, and that he knows everything he has could go away in no time.
