Living in her car while chasing laughs
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Before she became one of the best-known comedians and actresses in the United States, Tiffany Haddish spent a stretch of her early career homeless, living out of her car while she tried to make it in comedy. She kept it to herself. The Entertainment Tonight report that tells the story, published in June 2018, does not give dates or a location for that time, and it does not describe how her housing situation was eventually settled.

The account comes from her friend and fellow comedian Kevin Hart, who told it on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Hart said that he learned she was without a home, though she would not tell him where she lived. In his words, she was living out of her car and nobody knew. He took 300 dollars from his wallet and gave it to her, telling her he did not know what her situation was but hoped the money could help in that moment.

What happened to the money came out later. Hart said he learned that she used it to stay in a motel for about a week, which gave her access to a proper bathroom. She had not told him for years, and he said others were the ones who spread the story. Hart added that throughout this time he consistently told her she was funny and would be a star, and that she later wrote in her journal that his encouragement motivated her stand-up.

Her career moved quickly afterward. In 2017 Haddish had a breakout year with Girls Trip and by hosting Saturday Night Live, and in 2018 she co-starred with Hart in Night School, a film he wrote and produced. Hart joked on the show that he was still waiting for her to repay the 300 dollars. She went on to win an Emmy.
