Sugar Ray Seales — Moved into his own apartment · 2023 · Tacoma, Washington, United States
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Sugar Ray Seales won the Olympic gold medal in boxing in 1972. By the account in The News Tribune of Tacoma, his career included about 350 amateur bouts and more than five dozen professional fights. At 70 he was legally blind, which the paper linked to his years in the ring.
After his longtime wife died, Seales left Indianapolis and returned to Tacoma. He had hoped for a warmer welcome, and said he left so quickly that friends and family had little time to prepare. He began staying in cheap hotels on South Hosmer Street, moving from night to night, while his money, mostly his monthly Social Security payment, ran down.
In spring 2023 he spent about three weeks at the men's shelter run by a church in Tacoma's Hilltop neighbourhood. Gregory Christopher, of the church that runs the shelter, found him and helped arrange housing, and Seales tried to mentor the other men there. He told the paper it was not supposed to be like this, but also said that things took time and could not be rushed, so he could not complain.
After the paper's coverage, calls came in to the church. A GoFundMe campaign raised more than $8,000 toward housing costs, and his extended family helped him secure a place. Christopher said that without Seales's profile the process would have taken far longer.
Seales moved into a one-bedroom apartment in central Tacoma the day before the interview, published on 21 April 2023. He said it felt like being home again and like being free, and compared it with a penthouse given where he had come from. He told the reporter that he hopes to open a boxing gym to help young people in Tacoma.
