Drawn scene — not a portrait

Rudolph Valentino was born in May 1895 in Castellaneta, Italy. He earned a degree in farming science from a Royal Academy of Agriculture, moved to Paris at 17 and a year later to New York City.

In spring 1914 he found work as an apprentice gardener at Oak Hill, the Long Island estate of Cornelius N. Bliss Jr. He was discharged for neglecting his work. According to the Long Island Press, he then struggled in Manhattan. Steady work was hard to find, even though he worked as a nightclub dancer and ballroom partner. He slept on park benches and in all-night theatres, pawned his possessions and took small roles as a background actor in films. The article does not say how long this lasted or give exact dates.

His fortunes began to turn in October 1914, when Maxim's Restaurant-Cabaret hired him to dance the tango with wealthy women. After a Chilean heiress's divorce and an arrest on vice charges, he left for the west and shortened his name to Rudolph Valentino.

In 1917 he taught dance at San Francisco's Cliff House and then moved to Hollywood. His breakout role came in 1921 in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, followed by The Sheik and The Son of the Sheik, and he became one of the biggest stars of the silent era.

He died in 1926 at the age of 31, from complications after surgery for ruptured gastric ulcers.
