Rocky Lockridge — Supported by a retired boxers' charity · 1990s–2009 · Camden, New Jersey, United States
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Rocky Lockridge was a boxer from Tacoma, Washington, trained by Lou Duva, who finished with 44 wins, 36 of them by knockout, and nine losses. In 1984 he went to Texas as an underdog and knocked out the unbeaten Roger Mayweather in the first round to win the WBA super featherweight title. He later lost it, and in 1986 he fought Julio César Chávez in Monaco. About a year after that he became IBF super featherweight champion by beating Australia's Barry Michael. Late in his career he also beat the unbeaten Harold Knight over 15 rounds in Atlantic City.
Lockridge retired in 1991. In a profile for the Newark Star-Ledger in June 2009, he blamed partying, poor handling of his money and bitter feelings about boxing for the way his life went off course. He had been living in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. He separated from his wife, Carolyn, and their two sons in Tacoma and returned to Camden in 1993.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer in July 2009, he had lived since 1993 in abandoned houses and homeless shelters in Camden. That month he was arrested on municipal charges at 7th and Chestnut streets, where people knew him as the champ. A small circle looked out for him. Orlando Pettigrew, a mail carrier, had spent about a year bringing him food and clothes and getting in touch with his estranged son, and a bar owner, Claude Britt, also kept an eye on him.
Alex Ramos, a friend who founded the Retired Boxers Foundation, said Lockridge needed to go into rehabilitation and that he could return to the sport as a trainer if he got his life in order. Knight, the man he had beaten, said Lockridge simply needed to keep fighting. The article does not describe what help was finally provided.
