Park benches before Matchbox Twenty

Rob Thomas is best known as the frontman of Matchbox Twenty and as the co-writer of the hit Smooth. A Yahoo Entertainment interview published when he was 51, in which he looks back on a life in rock, gives a short account of a difficult stretch in his teens. He says he was about 17 and was navigating his way through a bad situation. He had dropped out of high school.

At that age he drifted around the southeastern United States. He describes living on park benches and hitchhiking around the Southeast, and he says that he ended up homeless for a while. The article does not give dates, name the places where he stayed, or say how long it went on. It also does not say that he slept in a car.

What kept him going, in his own words, was other people. He says he existed on the kindness of people who would take him in, and that he was just lucky enough to settle himself into something. The interview does not describe a single turning point. After he found his footing, he worked many jobs, including restaurant work, construction, delivery and roofing, while he kept playing music.

Matchbox Twenty, the band he went on to front, exploded onto the mainstream in 1996 with its debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You. The article does not say when or how the band formed.
