Under Lagos Bridges Before Nollywood Stardom

Ramsey Nouah is one of Nollywood's best-known leading men, but he has often spoken about a childhood in Lagos when his family had almost nothing. In interviews published in 2014 and again in 2024, he described a period when he and his mother had no home of their own.
He told Stargist that the two of them lived on the street and in a store so small that only a mat would fit, which they shared. They had no cups and no stove. His mother borrowed and begged to get by, and there were times, he said, when they went three or four days without eating. In another account he said he had also slept under a bridge, though the article reporting the 2024 interview noted that his own description centred on the street and the store.
He has been candid about how that time felt. As a child he did not fully realise how severe their poverty was, and he said that at the time he hated everyone around him and wondered why it was happening. Looking back, his view changed. He says he is now grateful for the experience and believes it prepared him for what came later.
The articles do not describe exactly how he moved from those years into acting. What they record is the result: he became a leading name in Nigerian film, and he frames his story as proof that success does not come without hard work and determination. His account of the early hardship has become a regular part of how people talk about his rise.
