From Pavement Sleeper to Nepal's Hockey Captain
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Raju Adhikari spent his early childhood in Hetaunda, Nepal, in a home he did not want to live in. He saw his father abuse his mother while in a state that made him afraid, and after his mother left he later fled home himself. The article, published by OnlineKhabar English, does not give his exact age.

He ended up on the streets of Hetaunda and moved between Hetaunda, Chitwan, Pokhara and Kathmandu. He worked as a labourer carrying sacks and collected litter along the riverside to sell. In less than four years he had become the leader of his own street gang, and the article does not state the total length of this period.

The turning point came through Arpan Parajuli, a student who was studying street children. He bought them food and later rented a house for Adhikari and 13 other children. Parajuli went on to found Mamaghar to house them.

Sport followed by accident. A foreigner left a hockey stick and ball at Mamaghar, and the Hetaunda coach Manoj Sharma invited the boys to train. Adhikari played for the team of Bagmati province, took part in a provincial tournament in Jhapa and then competed in the seventh and eighth National Games.

He went on to captain Nepal's team, which beat India 4-3 in the final of the Indo-Nepal Championship. He scored the first goal, and Nepal came back from two goals down.
