Drawn scene — not a portrait

Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi, the brothers who make up Rae Sremmurd, grew up mostly in Tupelo, Mississippi, where the family moved back when the boys were in middle school. The Fader's 2016 cover story does not use the word homeless, but it describes years of unstable housing and money trouble.

During high school their mother and stepfather separated, and the brothers were repeatedly kicked out of the house. Jxmmi called it a lot of stress. After one such incident, they decided never to go back. Still in high school, they moved into an abandoned house with a friend of their stepfather's. The city did not require rent as long as they paid for the electricity. Swae described the place as cold, with cold water.

After Swae turned 18 in 2011, the brothers moved to Atlanta, staying with a cousin and recording in a producer's basement. After about a year they ran out of money and went back to Tupelo, and the group effectively broke up. Jxmmi took a factory job working seven in the morning until seven at night. He remembers that he was just saving his money, mostly living in his truck, a GMC Jimmy that inspired his stage name. When he turned 21 in 2012, he rented an apartment, and the others moved in.

The producer P-Nazty saw potential in their song I Dip, and the group returned to Atlanta to try again, which Swae says was only possible because a friend had a car. They worked for about a year in the basement of the producer Mike WiLL Made-It, who then signed them. They became Rae Sremmurd and went on to score chart-topping hits.
