He Threw His Draft Party at His Old Shelter
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Najee Harris grew up in California as one of five children. For several years, while he was in middle school, he and his four siblings lived with their parents at a shelter in Richmond, California, run by the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program, known as GRIP. Looking back, Harris described that period as a time when life felt really low. The family later moved to Antioch.

Football carried him forward. He became a star running back at the University of Alabama. As a junior in 2019 he ran for 1,224 yards, and in 2020 he gained 1,466 yards and won the Doak Walker Award, given each year to the top running back in the country.

When the 2021 NFL Draft arrived, Harris chose to spend part of the day at the place that had once sheltered his family. A few hours before the first round, he visited GRIP, which hosted a draft-watching party in his honour. He brought food for the families now living there. His mother was emotional during the visit, he said.

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him with the 24th overall pick. The shelter's executive director, Kathleen Sullivan, told a local television station that seeing him there as a grown man with such an opportunity showed that anything is possible. Harris said there was a time when he needed a helping hand, and that giving back was now his job.
