Montserrat Caballé became one of the most celebrated operatic sopranos in the world. In a 2010 interview, republished by El Español, and in an earlier television interview with TVE, she looked back on a childhood marked by hardship. She said that her family had been evicted several times and that she and her brother sometimes slept outdoors. In her words, there was a great deal of misery.
She recalled that the family could not pay the rent and that the police came to the house, by her account up to three times, to remove them. After one eviction they spent the night in Plaza Catalunya, in Catalonia, and watched the sun rise there. Pigeons woke them early, looking for food.
The difficulties continued when the family moved abroad. They lived in Switzerland for three hard years, during which the language barrier made things harder, and then moved to Germany with her father for four years. She remembered one festive season when the only food in the house was stale bread. A neighbour gave them an egg, and her mother made dishes out of bread.
She credited her father with helping the family get through these years, because he described hardships in a way that made them easier to overcome.
Her first professional steps in music were not easy either. She said that many auditions ended in rejection and that for a long time it seemed as if doors were not opening. Despite those early setbacks she went on to build a career in music and opera that took her to the world's major stages, and she spoke of her poverty as something she had lived through and no longer needed to hide.
