The Real '12th Fail' Who Once Had No Roof
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Manoj Kumar Sharma was born in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, to a humble family. He received a third division in his Class 9 and 10 exams and failed every subject except Hindi in his Class 12 boards. To support himself and his family he drove a tempo, a small three-wheeled vehicle. When the police confiscated it, he asked a sub-divisional magistrate how one could become such an officer, and was advised to prepare for the state civil service exam.

He then came to Gwalior and enrolled in a graduation course. Money was so short that, as Indian Masterminds describes it, there was a point when he had no place to live and slept alongside beggars. The article gives no dates and does not say how long this period lasted.

He kept studying. He found work as a peon in a library, where he read about figures such as Maxim Gorky and Abraham Lincoln, and he completed his graduation at the Maharani LaxmiBai Government College of Excellence in Gwalior.

He moved to Delhi to prepare seriously for the Civil Services Examination and earned extra money by walking dogs for people, reportedly 400 rupees for the work. His girlfriend, Shraddha Joshi, supported him through his failed attempts; she later cleared the exam herself, became an IRS officer and is now his wife.

He failed the civil services exam three times and cleared it on his fourth attempt, in 2005, becoming an Indian Police Service officer. He was allotted the Maharashtra cadre, held several important posts there and served on central deputation with the CISF. He later wrote a book about his journey, 12th Fail.
