A Church Basement Home Before the Olympic Track
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Lolo Jones grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, in a family that often struggled to stay settled. Her single mother worked, often at two jobs, and moved between Texas and Iowa. Her father, who had served in the Air Force and spent time in jail, was not much present in her life. By the time she was in third grade, the family had ended up living in the basement of a church.

Jones attended eight schools in eight years. The family had no car, and she walked to school through Iowa winters. In August 1998 she moved in with the family of Randy Essex, a newspaper editor who had noticed that no adult was cheering for her at youth track meets. She stayed there about sixteen months. In all she lived with three host families, among them a Des Moines attorney, Kim Walker, and his wife, Jean.

Running gave her direction. When her mother planned a move to a town with no track, Jones told her she could not go somewhere without one. She finished at Des Moines Roosevelt High School and joined the track team at Louisiana State University. There she noticed how different her situation was when teammates went home for the holidays and she had no bedroom to return to. She graduated with a degree in economics and a minor in Spanish.

After college she took minimum-wage jobs, including cleaning at a gym, while she kept training. She missed the 2004 Olympic team after a fall at the trials, but sponsors including Oakley and Asics later allowed her to train full time. By 2008 she was the reigning world indoor champion in the 60-metre hurdles and a favourite for the Beijing Games. She went on to compete in two Summer Olympics and, later, in bobsled at the Winter Games.
