The Back Seat That Launched a Haircare Empire
Drawn scene — not a portrait

John Paul DeJoria was born in 1944 in Los Angeles to immigrant parents, his father from Italy and his mother from Greece. His parents divorced before he was two, and his mother supported her two sons by making hats. At nine he began working, first selling greeting cards door to door and then delivering newspapers for the Los Angeles Examiner, and he gave his earnings to his mother. According to the Horatio Alger Association, he was voted least likely to succeed in high school, graduated in 1962 and joined the US Navy.

His working life after that was uneven. He sold encyclopedias door to door, became a circulation manager for Time, Inc., and then worked for the hair-care company Redken. He was fired from several jobs. In 1980, he and the hairdresser Paul Mitchell launched their own hair-care company with 700 dollars, some of it borrowed from his mother.

Afterwards, he lived in his car for several weeks, spending only 2.50 dollars a day on food, with no money for advertising. In an Entrepreneur article he describes himself as broke and living in his car, and says that a try, try, try mindset kept him going, both then and when he launched Paul Mitchell. He believed the products would last because, if enough people tried them, they were so good that they would reorder.

John Paul Mitchell Systems grew to reach more than 90,000 salons in 82 countries. In 1989 DeJoria co-founded Patron Tequila, where he is listed as chairman emeritus. He says that he looks on the misfortunes in his life as blessings because they got him to the next step, and that he measures success by the good he does more than by company profits.
