Jean-Michel Basquiat — One of the most celebrated painters of his generation · mid-1970s · New York City, USA
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Jean-Michel Basquiat taught himself to be an artist. He never went to art school and said he learned mostly by looking. As a child in Brooklyn he drew on sheets of paper his father, Gerard, brought home from his accounting job, and his mother, Matilde, encouraged him, sketched with him and took him to the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Met.
At 15 he left home and went to Washington Square Park in Manhattan. He later recalled spending nights on benches in Tompkins Square Park. After about a week he was picked up by police and returned to his father. At 17 he left school without finishing, after an alleged prank with a cream pie aimed at the principal.
In the late 1970s he and a friend, Al Diaz, began writing cryptic messages and drawing symbols around New York under the name SAMO. The slogans poked fun at materialism and the art world's elitism. In 1978 the pair sold their story to the Village Voice, ending their anonymity, and SAMO is dead began to appear on walls. The two then fell out for about two years.
In 1979 he introduced himself to Andy Warhol at a restaurant and sold him some postcards. A 1981 show at MoMA PS1 brought him to the attention of the gallerist Annina Nosei, who gave him his first solo exhibition in March 1982. It was a success, and the morning after the opening he hired a limousine to visit his father in Brooklyn. Basquiat died in his studio on August 12, 1988, aged 27, leaving behind a body of work that made him one of the most celebrated painters of his generation.
