Javon Kinlaw — First-round NFL defensive tackle · 2000s–early 2010s · Washington, D.C. area and North Charleston, South Carolina, USA
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Javon Kinlaw's mother, Leesa James-Exum, moved to the United States from Trinidad in 1995. Her contract construction work was unreliable, so she could not keep a steady home for her sons, Javon and Shaquille. The family moved among rough neighbourhoods in the Washington, D.C., area. When Javon was 10, a job in Hyattsville, Maryland, fell through within weeks. A neighbour, Jillian Behram, then sheltered them in an unfinished basement for a couple of months, where the brothers shared a futon.
He often skipped school, and by fifth grade he was riding the D.C. subway, sometimes staying on trains all day because they were warm. Sometimes the family had no electricity or heat. He has said this made him a hard-nosed kid.
His parents had separated when he was five. In ninth grade he moved to North Charleston, South Carolina, to live with his father, but the arrangement was unstable, and at one point they lived in a motel. At 15, because of arguments at home, he often had to find other places to stay. His defensive line coach at Goose Creek High, Joe Bowers, drove him to wherever he was staying and bought him food. Calvin and Monica Davis eventually took him in full time.
He withdrew from Goose Creek in January of his senior year, in 2016, and with the help of coaches went through Jones County Junior College in Mississippi, which has a GED programme. He signed with the University of South Carolina in 2017 and had a breakout season in 2019, including a sack of Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa. He was a projected first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has given money to people living on the streets of Columbia and plans to help them with his future earnings, including building shelters. He says homeless people approach him as if they somehow know where he has been.
