Sleeping Rough at Fifteen, Then X Factor Champion
Drawn scene — not a portrait

James Arthur was born in Middlesbrough in north-east England and grew up in the seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. He has described himself as a tough, angry kid who was hard to live with. Looking back, he has also said he felt like an outsider as a boy, and that music was something he turned to early, partly to win his mother's attention.

When he was 15, his mother could no longer cope with him, and he left her house. He told the Sunday Mirror that this was when he began sleeping rough. He did not blame her, saying she was not able to handle him because he was so angry. The sources do not say how long he was without a stable home, or where exactly he stayed, only that his teenage years were unsettled.

Music remained a constant. As a teenager he started putting funny songs online, and schoolmates who found them asked him to sing for them. Years later he took part in ITV's The X Factor and won the ninth series in 2012. His first single, Impossible, reached number one in the UK, and his debut album climbed to number two the following year.

The years after the win were not easy. He lost his record deal with Syco after a public controversy and has spoken openly about a very low period in his career. In recent interviews he has said music served as a way of coping with painful experiences from the past, and that he found fame hard to handle. He has described working to rediscover his love of performing, and in March 2025 he played at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
