Champions League Debutant Left Without a Home
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Jacob Mellis came through the academy at Sheffield United but never played a senior game for the club before Chelsea signed him for £1 million. The Daily Mail reported that at his peak he earned more than £400,000 a year. For Chelsea he made one appearance, coming on in the 89th minute of a Champions League match against Zilina. His time there ended in 2012.

He went on to play for Southampton, Barnsley and Bolton, among other clubs. Mellis has said that drinking badly affected his career, and that at Chelsea people tried to help: the club's academy manager at the time, Dermot Drummy, gave him Ashley Cole as a mentor, and teammates and staff, including David Luiz and Steve Holland, also tried to address it. He was eventually forced to retire after a knee injury, which had been misdiagnosed, was found at Southend United.

The Star, in its 2023 report headlined that he was left homeless at 32, wrote that Mellis had lost his home, his car and his income. He said he did not want to depend on his family, who sometimes arranged hotel stays or had him stay at their own home. His situation was unsettled from one day to the next. In his words, he spent each day thinking about where to go.

Mellis said he was still drinking heavily to cope with stress. He was due to enter the Sporting Chance clinic that week, and the Professional Footballers' Association was arranging support for him. Chelsea had helped him earn Level 1 and Level 2 scouting badges, and he hoped to mentor young players and steer them away from the mistakes he made.
