Iran Barkley — Former world middleweight champion · around 2010 · New York City, USA
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Iran Barkley, nicknamed The Blade, grew up in the Patterson Houses, a public housing development in the Bronx, New York. Boxing was his way out. In 1988 he won the World Boxing Council middleweight title by upsetting Thomas Hearns in the third round of a fight broadcast on Showtime. He told NPR that the win and the boxing life let him see most of the world free.
More than twenty years later, his fortunes had turned. NPR reports that he was homeless and living in a subway station, carrying a bag of clothes and the title belt he had won from Hearns. He called it the lowest part of his life. The report does not give an exact year.
He explained the situation by saying that he had spent money, messed around and simply not managed it, and he also blamed some of the advisers around him at the time. He said that after boxing, fighters often lack the support they had during their careers.
Help came from Ring 10, a support group for former boxers founded by Matt Farrago in 2010. Its members helped him leave the streets and find a studio apartment.
At the time of the report he had remarried and was looking for work, and he wanted to write a book about his life. He goes to Ring 10 meetings with his family, which are held on the second Tuesday of most months. His story is that of a former world champion who found, in a community of fellow former fighters, the support he felt he had lacked once his career ended.
