The Manga Star Who Drew His Own Disappearance
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Hideo Azuma was a Japanese manga artist, born in 1950 in Hokkaido. He moved to Tokyo to work as an assistant to the manga artist Rentaro Itai and made his debut in 1969. He worked mostly in science-fiction comedy and absurd humour, with titles such as Futari to gonin and Fujori nikki. His best-known works, Nanako SOS and Olympus no Pollon, were adapted into anime and became familiar well beyond Japan, including in Italy, where they were shown as Nanà Super Girl and C'era una volta Pollon.

In 1979 his Fujori nikki won the Seiun Award for best science-fiction manga, which Il Fatto Quotidiano calls a milestone in his career.

Despite that recognition, in the 1980s Azuma chose to live without a fixed home. The newspaper says that he spent his days drinking and taking occasional jobs, and that his works were famous while he himself was largely forgotten. The article does not give exact years or ages for this period.

He later told the story himself in an autobiographical manga, Disappearance Diary, published in Japan in 2005. It recounts his depression, a sudden disappearance, life as a homeless person and as a manual worker, alcohol dependence and a hospital stay he did not choose. The Italian edition, issued by J-Pop in 2019, won that year's Gran Guinigi Prize at Lucca Comics for the rediscovery of a work.

Azuma died at 69 in a Tokyo hospital, from complications of a tumour. His family announced his death on 13 October 2019, after a private funeral had already been held.
