The World-Record Runner Who Lived in a Shelter
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Henry Rono, a Kenyan runner, was a sophomore at Washington State University in 1978 when he did something no one had done before. In just 81 days he set four world records: in the 10,000 metres (27:22.47), the 5,000 metres (13:08.4), the 3,000-metre steeplechase (8:05.4) and the 3,000 metres (7:32.1).

The years that followed were harder. He battled alcohol and poverty, and in the 1990s that left him in a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C. Rono has said that Kenya's boycotts of the 1976 and 1980 Olympics fed a drinking binge, and that the disappointment was utter.

He rebuilt his life gradually. By the time of the Washington Times report in March 2009 he was coaching high school athletes in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was pursuing a graduate degree in special education.

He had also returned to the sport that made his name. At 57, he had spent three years training to break the world masters record for the mile in the 55-to-59 age group, which stood at 4:40. Officials flew him to Landover, Maryland, to run the mile at the USATF Masters Indoor Championships on a Saturday, and he was also due to appear at the National Marathon expo at the D.C. Armory.

He told the paper that training for the mile record was something important to him. Smiling at his own ambition, he said that he was addicted to making world records.
