Halsey — Chart-topping pop singer · 2014 · New York City, USA
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Halsey was born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane and grew up in New Jersey. Around 2014, when she was 19, she dropped out of school, and her parents asked her to leave their home. She has said it was because they did not agree with a lot of things about her. In a 2016 Rolling Stone interview she described herself as technically homeless during that period.
She spent the following stretch moving between friends' basements in New Jersey and apartments in Bedford-Stuyvesant and the Lower East Side in New York. Her phone service was cut off, she had no health insurance, and friends would pool their money to split a one-dollar slice of pizza. At one point she had nine dollars in her bank account. She remembers using a four-pack of Red Bull to stay awake for two or three days, and explained that it felt less dangerous to go without sleep than to sleep somewhere random. When things got worse, she stayed with her grandmother. The article does not say how long the whole period lasted.
The change came through music. She uploaded a song called Ghost to SoundCloud, and by the next morning it was charting and five record labels had contacted her. It all happened within about two years of the time she was without a home.
Halsey signed with Astralwerks and released the EP Room 93, followed by the album Badlands, which debuted at Number Two on the Billboard 200. By the time of the interview she was living in a spacious house in Los Angeles, a long way from the basements where she had spent her nineteenth year.
