From Delhi's Catwalks to Its Parks and Temples
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Gitanjali Nagpal was a navy officer's daughter who studied at Lady Shri Ram College, one of India's leading colleges. In the 1990s she walked catwalks among Bollywood figures and modelled high-end designer couture for Mumbai's fashion crowd. Newspaper reports described her decade as tempestuous, with failed relationships, career setbacks and a drug habit.

In September 2007 journalists found her on the streets of south Delhi. She had been living in parks and other public places in the Hauz Khas area. The Independent, whose report was carried by the New Zealand Herald, said it was unclear exactly what had led to this, but noted that she had split from a British boyfriend she had met in Goa, after which she had nowhere to go. Her estranged husband was living in Germany with their son. The article does not say how long she had been without a home.

Her condition was serious. Her hair was matted into dreadlocks, her clothes were dirty and doctors reported sores covering her body.

The Delhi Commission for Women stepped in. It took her to a police station and then to the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences. A court order allowed medical treatment to go ahead, and staff said she had to be brought into hospital by force.

About twelve months later she was out of hospital and living with her mother in Haridwar, a town on the Ganges in the Himalayan foothills.
