Gims grew up in France after his family fled the former Zaire, then ruled by Mobutu. According to Paris Match, his father, a singer of Congolese rumba, wrote a song against Mobutu when Gims was about two and a half, and the family had to leave overnight. Because Gims was the youngest, he was the one sent to France, in 1989, a choice he describes as almost a coin toss with his brother.
His childhood in France was unsettled. The family moved from squat to squat and often had nowhere to live, and he said they called their home the ninja house, because they had to be ready to escape through a window if the police came. His attendance at school was poor because of the unstable housing, and he was once excluded for absences, although at primary school he performed in a Molière play.
His parents separated when he was nine. He lived with his mother, lost contact with his father, and often stayed outside or at friends' homes. Around the age of 15 he spent two years in a youth home at Forges-les-Bains, where his parents visited at weekends.
Music came into his life as an adolescent. At about 14 he began freestyling with friends. He first wanted to be a manga artist and attended an art school in Paris's 13th arrondissement, and his models were Wu-Tang Clan, IAM and Secteur A. In 2002 he founded the rap group Sexion d'Assaut, which made him known. Their hit Sapés comme jamais has more than 480 million views on YouTube, and in 2020 the group announced a reunion tour with dates at Paris La Défense Arena in September 2021. نشأ غيمس في فرنسا بعد أن فرّت أسرته من زائير سابقا، التي كان يحكمها موبوتو. وبحسب مجلة باري ماتش، كتب والده، وهو مغنٍ للرومبا الكونغولية، أغنية ضد موبوتو حين كان غيمس في نحو الثانية والنصف، فاضطرت الأسرة إلى المغادرة في ليلة واحدة. ولأنه كان الأصغر، فهو الذي أُرسل إلى فرنسا عام 1989، وهو اختيار يصفه بأنه يشبه القرعة مع أخيه.
