Sleeping Behind Bushes, Then Earning a PhD

Eric Thomas — Motivational speaker, author and PhD · late 1980s · Detroit, Michigan, USA
Sleeping Behind Bushes, Then Earning a PhD
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Eric Thomas was born in Chicago, and around the age of five his mother moved the family to Detroit for a job with Ford Motor Company. He recalls that they travelled back to Chicago every weekend for seven years. He left home for the first time at 13, and at 16 he left for good.

From about 16 to 18 he had no home. He slept near his family's house at first, then in a friend's car, and later in an abandoned building. He worked the night shift at a 24-hour McDonald's in Detroit, from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., which gave him a safe place to be through the night. He has said that when you are homeless at 16, by 19 you are pretty mature about it.

He dropped out of high school. A girlfriend, later his wife, told him she would not go to college with him unless he got his GED, so he studied for and took the exam. A mentor who guided him helped him get it and sent him on to college. He attended Oakwood University in Alabama and then Michigan State University; he says a four-year degree took him twelve years, and it was followed by a master's degree and then a PhD. About his mother's influence, he said he did not know what he wanted to be but he knew what he did not want to be.

Thomas found that speaking and teaching were the thing he did well, calling it magical when he did it. He became a motivational speaker, author, podcaster and online personality, and directs Breathe University. He has also done voiceover work and commercials and names several business clients. In an interview published in January 2020, when he was 47, he said he had been married for more than 27 years and had two children.
