From Circle Line Naps to Global Stadium Tours

From Circle Line Naps to Global Stadium Tours
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Ed Sheeran moved from Suffolk to London to pursue music and, as he has described it, ran out of money for rent. In an interview with Capital he said he had nowhere to live for much of 2008 and the whole of 2009 and 2010, but that he somehow made it work.

He has been careful to describe what that meant. In his book A Visual Journey he wrote that he spent a couple of nights in an arch with a heating duct near Buckingham Palace, and that he wrote a song there. In the Capital interview he said it was not as if he had been sleeping rough on the cold streets. What he lacked was a stable address.

His routine, he said, was to play a gig, wait for the Underground to open at 5 a.m., and sleep on the Circle Line until around noon, then go to a session and repeat. At one point he spent a week catching up on sleep on those trains. On other nights he could call certain friends for a sofa or a floor, and he knew places where a bed was available at particular times.

He kept playing live and sold CDs from his rucksack. He said being sociable helped him get by. The period was not comfortable: he recalled that his hygiene suffered because he did not get a chance to shower, and that he had 23 dreadlocks on one side of his head from not washing his hair, which his girlfriend counted as she combed them out.

Capital's article presents his own account and notes that the two descriptions, the arch in his book and the later comment that he was not really homeless, are not fully resolved. He carried on gigging through those years until his breakthrough.
