Hamburg Street Kid Turned Bestselling Author and Founder
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Dominik Bloh was born in 1988 and grew up in Hamburg, raised by a single mother. In his own account, given in an interview carried by the church news portal evangelisch.de, the turning point came when he was sixteen. His mother had become seriously unwell, struggling with deep depression, and she gave up guardianship of him and told him to leave.

He has said that he became homeless through no fault of his own, as a result of that family situation. From then on he lived on the streets of Hamburg. The interview does not say how long this lasted, but it makes clear that the experience shaped everything that followed.

He later wrote about those years in a book, Unter Palmen aus Stahl, which tells the story of a street kid in the city's concrete landscape. It became a bestseller on the Spiegel list and brought him a public voice as an author and campaigner on homelessness.

Out of that experience came a practical project. Bloh set up GoBanyo in Hamburg, a service that brings showers to people living outdoors, under the motto that washing is dignity. It has operated since 2019 using a converted bus, and the interview reports that in five years the bus has provided more than 30,000 showers. A second bus has since been added, partly paid for by donations, and the project runs scheduled tours through the city, stopping where people or teams have registered in advance.

Bloh argues that everyone should have the right to a shower, and the project is his way of putting that idea into daily practice.
