Dawn Loggins — Admitted to Harvard University · 2011–2012 · Lawndale, North Carolina, USA
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Dawn Loggins was 18 and about to graduate from Burns High School in Lawndale, North Carolina, in June 2012. Her childhood had been unsettled. She moved often, and some of the homes she lived in went for long stretches without power or water.
The summer after she attended an academic summer camp, she came home to find that her parents had left. They had moved to Tennessee without her. When she called them, she recalled, the line told her the number had been temporarily disconnected. She was left without a home.
For a time she moved from couch to couch. Then a school counselor asked a custodian at the school, Sheryl Kolton, to take her in. Loggins later said that being allowed to stay there was the best thing that had happened to her. Kolton said that Dawn did not owe her anything.
Loggins also took a job as a custodian at her own high school. She started at 6 a.m. and worked two hours before classes and two hours after, and she planned to put part of what she saved toward college. Alongside that she was president of the photography, rock climbing and Spanish clubs, started a community service project for active-duty soldiers, and belonged to the National Honor Society, the Beta Club and the National Spanish Honor Society. She graduated near the top of her class. A friend urged her to aim high, and she was accepted to Harvard University's class of 2016. She planned to pay for it with financial aid, local scholarships and her cleaning savings.
