Former Warriors Defender Found on Johannesburg Streets
Drawn scene — not a portrait

David Mkandawire is a former footballer from Zimbabwe. He played for the national team, the Warriors, and was described in the Zimbabwean press as a former AmaZulu and Warriors strongman. He also played in India and in South Africa's Absa Premiership for Maritzburg and the University of Pretoria.

In 2016, he was seen begging for food in the Kempton Park area, a sight that touched many people. Warriors striker Tendai Ndoro helped him get professional help, and with support from the South African Football Association and the South African Football Players Union, he obtained a Caf D coaching licence.

By late 2017 he told Chronicle Sport that he had upgraded to a Caf B licence, and that he hoped to earn a Caf A licence. He asked for help finding a club to coach in Zimbabwe. In his words, he wanted people to help him look for a club to coach back home.

In February 2018, The Chronicle reported that he had reportedly been seen again in Johannesburg, barely two years after being taken off the streets. A Zimbabwean living in South Africa said he had been spotted near the Royal Hotel on Nugget Street, and added that he did not seem to recognise anyone. Reporters could not reach him because his mobile number was not connecting. These sightings come from unnamed sources and second-hand accounts, so they are not confirmed.
