Drawn scene — not a portrait

Chris Pratt is best known today as a leading man in large Hollywood films, but his path began far from Los Angeles. After dropping out of college, he moved to Maui, Hawaii, where he lived in a van and supported himself by waiting tables. The report of his story, published by CBS News in August 2014, does not say how long he lived this way or where the van was parked.

He worked at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant in Maui. One day he served the actress Rae Dawn Chong, who was then preparing to direct her first film, Cursed Part III. She offered him a role in it and told him she would bring him to Los Angeles to take part. Pratt has recalled that the moment she said she was taking him to Los Angeles, he knew things were about to change. The film is what got him off the island.

In 2014, when he was 35, Pratt posted a throwback photo on Facebook showing the Scooby-Doo-style van he had once lived in. He captioned it with the words that it was the van he used to live in. In an interview with the Independent, he joked that Maui was a pretty awesome place to be homeless.

By the time the photo made the news, his career had grown a long way from that restaurant job. The article mentions a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, the seventh and final season of the series Parks and Recreation, and his upcoming role in Jurassic World, all of which showed how far he had come from the van in Maui.
