She Lived at Her Station, Then Built Urban One
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Cathy Hughes was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1971 to lecture at Howard University's school of communications. She rose quickly in radio. She became sales manager of the university's station, WHUR, in 1973 and its general manager in 1975, the first woman to run a broadcast facility in the capital. In 1976 she created the Quiet Storm, a weekend programme of ballads and love songs by Black artists.

In 1980, after 32 lenders turned her down, she managed to buy WOL-AM in Washington and founded the company that became Radio One. The station was not bringing in money. Hughes, who had her son Alfred Liggins when she was 17, ended up living at the station with him. They later moved into a trailer near the office, in a neighbourhood the AJC describes as troubled. She has said that sometimes you have to be uncomfortable doing things you are not sure about in order to reach the next level.

She kept building. She started a daily talk show in 1986, and in 1987 she and her son turned a struggling station into WMMJ, which became the company's first profitable outlet. In 1995 Radio One bought a station in Atlanta that became the city's first hip-hop station, where Ludacris and LaLa Anthony began as interns.

Hughes stepped down as chief executive in 1997 and handed the role to Liggins, who took the company public on the New York Stock Exchange, making her the first Black woman to head a publicly traded company. Radio One was renamed Urban One in 2017 and now owns 57 stations in 15 markets, along with the cable networks TV One and CLEO TV. In 2019 she became the first Black woman radio inductee in the Broadcast Hall of Fame, and in 2024, at 76, she was still chairwoman and planning a documentary about her mother's swing band.
