Carlos Peniche — Former telenovela actor who found support after living on the street · 2017 · Mexico City, Mexico
Drawn scene — not a portrait
Carlos Peniche became known to Mexican television audiences in the late 1990s through telenovelas. El Siglo de Torreón lists Mi querida Isabel, which aired in 1996 and 1997, El diario de Daniela in 1999 and La casa en la playa in 2000, along with films including Del infierno a la luz, Provocación and Campeón.
His career then slowed. The newspaper reports that he left Televisa and afterwards took secondary roles at TV Azteca. As work became scarcer, he began to live on the street, with little income and little contact with those around him. A relative, the actor Arturo Peniche, is mentioned in other coverage, in which his nephew told the programme Ventaneando that he had lost everything.
In 2017 Ventaneando filmed him living on the streets of Mexico City, eating food that restaurants had thrown away. La Opinión places this in December 2017 and says that reports at the time described him as struggling with addiction and cut off from his family, spending nights outdoors and surviving on whatever he could find.
The footage changed his situation. By February 2018, about two months later, La Opinión reports that he had left the street and found work. He told the magazine TV Notas that he was 41, was working as a private driver in a friend's car, and hoped to start a taxi service, and that he had stayed sober with the support of his girlfriend. In the words quoted by the paper, everything had been wonderful and he had not expected it.
El Siglo de Torreón adds that he later worked for Telemundo. It describes him as now largely out of public life, with a partner, and as helping other people who are homeless.
