From Teenage Squats to Culture Club Stardom
Drawn scene — not a portrait

George O'Dowd, who became known to the world as Boy George, grew up in south London, one of five children in a family of Irish descent. He has described the 1970s, the decade of his youth, as an awful time, and has spoken of a childhood that he called traumatic and very violent. He also says he grew up with a strong streak of resistance to authority.

As a teenager he left the family home and moved into central London, where he lived in squats, including in the area around Warren Street. The sources are brief about this stage and give no exact dates or length of time. He has described those years as formative, and they placed him in the middle of a young, inventive crowd that was reshaping London nightlife.

He became a regular at the Blitz club, run by Steve Strange and Rusty Egan, a centre of the New Romantic scene. His striking, androgynous look made him stand out, and the manager Malcolm McLaren noticed him and invited him to perform with Bow Wow Wow. That arrangement was short-lived. He then formed Culture Club with Mikey Craig, Roy Hay and Jon Moss.

The group's single Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, performed on Top of the Pops in 1982, reached number one in Britain and topped the charts in many other countries. Over his career he has sold more than 100 million singles and 50 million albums, written two bestselling autobiographies, and worked as a DJ, a fashion designer and a theatre producer.
