Drawn scene — not a portrait
Christopher Rios, who would become the rapper Big Pun, was born on November 10, 1971, in the Bronx, New York, and was proud of his Puerto Rican heritage. He did well in school and played sports early on. As a young father, he had his first child with his junior high school girlfriend, Liza, and the two married in 1990 and went on to have two more children.
According to the Biography.com profile, a difficult home life led him to leave home at 15, and he later dropped out of high school. During those years he taught himself by reading widely, and he got into breakdancing and rapping. The profile says that at times he was homeless. It does not name the places where he stayed, give dates, or say how long this lasted or how it ended.
He performed as Big Moon Dog and formed a group called Full a Clips Crew, standing out for his complex rhymes and his ability to rap for long stretches without pausing for breath. In 1995 he met the rapper and producer Fat Joe, who invited him to appear on the song Watch Out. He took the name Big Punisher, inspired by a comic book character, and joined Fat Joe's Terror Squad.
His first hit, I'm Not a Player, came in 1997. His debut album, Capital Punishment, followed in 1998 and sold more than two million copies, making him the first Latino rapper to be certified platinum. On February 7, 2000, while his Bronx home was being renovated, Rios and his family were staying in a hotel in White Plains, New York, when he collapsed and died of heart failure at the age of 28. Thousands of fans attended his wake in the Bronx, and a mural honouring him was painted in his neighbourhood.
