From Mumbai Pavements to the Director's Chair
Drawn scene — not a portrait

Anurag Kashyap was a zoology student at Hansraj College in Delhi with no particular interest in filmmaking, until he watched Vittorio De Sica's film Bicycle Thieves at a film festival in Delhi in 1993. He has said that he decided to give it all up, and he left for Bombay.

He arrived with Rs 6,000, and the money ran out within a week. With nowhere to stay, he slept outside Dadar, Andheri and Vile Parle stations, under the water tank of the Four Bungalows complex in Andheri, and on the pavements of Juhu Circle. For some days he stayed in the room of Imtiaz Ali.

He found work at Prithvi Theatre and wrote for the television shows Auto Narayan and Kabhie Kabhie. In 1996, the actor Manoj Bajpayee recommended him to Ram Gopal Varma, and he co-wrote the story and screenplay of Satya with Saurabh Shukla.

As a director, his first film, Paanch, never received a theatrical release. His notable films include Black Friday in 2006, Dev D, Gulaal and Gangs of Wasseypur. Bombay Velvet, with a reported budget of Rs 118 crore, grossed Rs 48 crore and was a box-office disaster. DNA India also credits him with Sacred Games, which it calls India's first hit show on OTT, and notes that he has not yet had an out-and-out blockbuster in Bollywood.
