Antonio Brown grew up in Liberty City, a rough neighbourhood outside Miami. He saw crime up close, with friends who were robbed, killed or jailed. Even in elementary school he told his teachers he wanted to be a professional football player.
At 16, a change at home left him on his own and he had to look after himself. He moved from place to place, staying with friends and sometimes coaches, in areas where he could keep attending school and playing football. According to the Steelers' account, he never turned to crime. He kept his focus on football and his grades high enough to stay on track.
In 2006 he enrolled at a prep school in North Carolina to become eligible for college football. In five games there he recorded 451 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns, as well as 1,247 passing yards and 11 passing touchdowns, and he returned punts and kickoffs for touchdowns.
He then went to Central Michigan, arriving as a walk-on and earning a scholarship a week into fall practice. Between 2007 and 2009 he scored on long plays every season, including a 90-yard play in 2007 and a 93-yard play in 2008. After a coaching change for 2010, he declared for the draft following his junior year.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He became one of the most productive wide receivers in the league during his years in Pittsburgh. Of his road, he said that nobody is going to give you anything.
