From a Wooden Kiosk to Kumawood Stardom

Agya Koo, whose real name is Alex Kofi Adu, is a major figure in Ghana's Kumawood film industry. Before he became a household name, he went through a hard stretch in his early career, living in Kasoa with no proper home. He has described sleeping in a small wooden structure there.

He recalled that the late Kumawood actor Santo rented a house nearby and often teased him about how modestly he lived. In his words, Santo used to make fun of the way he lived, but the two were very close. The report does not say how long he lived in the structure or give further detail about the years that followed.

What it does say is that he faced considerable hardship before reaching his current position in Kumawood. Today he lives in a large mansion in Kwadaso Denkyemuoso, in the Ashanti Region, which he unveiled on 4 June 2023, his 54th birthday.

When social media users suggested that government support had paid for the house, Koo rejected the idea. He said he bought the land in 2007, and that the money to build came from his acting, his music performances and help from his family. In his words, no government funded the house.
