The Runaway Teen Who Slept at Jakarta's Arts Institute

Abimana Aryasatya was born Robertino on 24 October 1982 and never knew his father. He was an only son, raised by his mother and her family. He told The Jakarta Post in 2014 that the upbringing was strict, and that he was often beaten when he refused to do what he was told.

In his early teens he ran away. He described himself as always a rebel who simply wanted to play guitar every day. He was told to go to school, chose the guitar instead and fled. With nowhere else to go, he lived and slept inside the Jakarta Arts Institute complex, known as IKJ. The article does not give his exact age or say how long he stayed.

At IKJ he made friends among the students, and that opened doors to the entertainment world. During the late-1990s boom in private television, a friend who worked at Indosiar brought him on as a crew member. Friends then cast him in the series Lupus, which launched his acting career.

He appeared in horror films in the mid-2000s and then vanished from the industry in 2006, moving with his wife, Nidya Ayu, to Semarang to run a burger business. About five years later he returned to acting in the 2011 remake of Catatan Si Boy, under a new name.

He met his wife at 19, and they have four children. He says he has made peace with his mother and family, and he has pledged not to treat his own children the way he was treated.
